语境词汇题:读懂生词周围的句子
7 分钟
A vocabulary-in-context question is not testing whether you memorized the word — it is testing whether you can use the sentence to work it out, the same skill a native reader uses on an unfamiliar word every day. There are four clue types to look for, roughly in order of how often they appear: (1) restatement — the sentence defines the word in different terms nearby, often after a comma or dash; (2) contrast — a word like "but", "unlike", or "whereas" tells you the unfamiliar word means roughly the opposite of something nearby; (3) example — a list or "such as" phrase shows you the category the word belongs to; (4) cause-and-effect — the surrounding logic ("because", "as a result") constrains what the word could plausibly mean. Before you look at the answer options, form your own rough guess from the sentence — vague is fine ("something negative", "a kind of quick change") — then match it to the closest option.
"Unlike her predecessor, who approached negotiations with open hostility, the new ambassador was known for her conciliatory style, often finding a middle ground that satisfied both sides."
You may not know "conciliatory". Two clues fire at once. Contrast: "Unlike her predecessor" tells you conciliatory is roughly the opposite of "open hostility" — so it should mean something like peaceable or accommodating. Restatement: the clause after the comma, "often finding a middle ground that satisfied both sides", restates the idea in plain language. You do not need the dictionary definition; "tending to compromise and avoid conflict" is close enough to answer any question the exam asks.
你可能不认识 "conciliatory" 这个词。这句话同时给出了两种线索。对比线索:"Unlike her predecessor"(与她的前任不同)告诉你 conciliatory 大致与 "open hostility"(公开的敌意)相反——所以它的意思应该接近"温和"或"愿意妥协"。同位改写线索:逗号后的分句 "often finding a middle ground that satisfied both sides"(常常找到让双方都满意的折中方案)用大白话重述了这个概念。你不需要词典上的精确定义;"倾向于妥协、避免冲突"这个理解,已经足以答对考试中关于这个词的任何题目。
One trap to watch for: exam vocabulary questions frequently offer an option that is the correct dictionary meaning of a common word the unfamiliar word merely resembles, or a meaning that fits the word in general but not in this specific sentence. Always test each option by substituting it back into the sentence and checking whether the sentence's logic still works — not just whether the word could theoretically mean that in some other context. If a synonym fits the topic but breaks the sentence's cause-and-effect or contrast, it is a distractor.
有一个陷阱要特别留意:考试的词汇题经常会给出一个选项,它是某个与生词形似的常见词的正确词典释义,或者是这个词"泛泛而言"可以有的意思,但并不适合这句话的具体语境。务必把每个选项代入句子中重新检验——检查的是句子的逻辑是否依然成立,而不只是这个词在某种其他语境下是否"理论上可以"是这个意思。如果某个同义词在话题上说得通,却破坏了句子的因果或对比逻辑,它就是干扰项。
