TOEFL Independent Speaking gives you 15 seconds to prepare and 45 seconds to speak. That is roughly 110–130 words — barely enough for a position and two supported reasons, and not enough to recover if you wander off-topic mid-answer. The single biggest score killer is not grammar; it is running out of things to say at second 25 and trailing off, or spending 20 seconds restating the question. The fix is a template you rehearse until it is automatic: (1) one sentence stating your position, (2) reason one plus one concrete detail, (3) reason two plus one concrete detail, (4) if time remains, a one-sentence wrap-up. During prep time, you are not drafting sentences — you are filling four slots: position, reason A, reason B, and one detail for each.
Prompt: "Some students prefer to study alone; others prefer to study in groups. Which do you prefer?" Response: "I prefer studying in groups, mainly for two reasons. First, group study lets me catch mistakes I wouldn't notice alone — last semester, a classmate spotted an error in my calculus homework that I'd checked three times myself. Second, explaining a concept to someone else forces me to understand it more deeply; when I taught a friend how photosynthesis works before our biology exam, I realized I hadn't actually understood one step until I had to say it out loud.
Position first, in one breath — no hedging, no restating the prompt. Reason one ("catch mistakes") is immediately followed by a specific, personal detail (the calculus homework, checked three times, a classmate spotted it) rather than staying abstract. Reason two ("explaining forces deeper understanding") gets the same treatment: a named subject (photosynthesis), a specific moment (before the exam), and a concrete realization. Notice neither reason ever drifts into a third idea — with 45 seconds, two well-detailed reasons beat three thin ones every time, because graders score development, not the number of points you touch.
One more discipline the template forces: your detail must be concrete enough that a stranger could picture it — a specific person, place, number, or moment. "Group study helps because you get feedback" is still a claim, not a detail; "my roommate caught a mistake in my thesis statement" is a detail. If you cannot think of a real detail in prep time, invent a plausible, specific one — graders assess your language, not the truth of your example. What they can hear immediately is the difference between a sentence that stays general the whole way through and one that lands on a specific image.
Group study helps because you get feedback"(小组学习有帮助,因为能得到反馈)这仍然只是一个论断,不是细节;"my roommate caught a mistake in my thesis statement"(室友发现了我论文陈述句里的一个错误)才是细节。
