Nowadays, many people talk about generalist and specialist in working field1. Some people think generalist is better because they know many things. Other people think specialist is better. In my opinion, I disagree with this statement, I think specialist is better than generalist.
First reason is, specialist know very much about one thing, so company need them. For example, if a company have a problem about computer, they need a person who is expert in computer, not a person who know a little about many things. A generalist cannot solve the difficult problem, only specialist can solve it.2 This is very important for company.
Second reason is, specialist can get more money than generalist. Because specialist skill is rare, not many people have this skill, so company must pay more money to keep them3. My friend is a specialist in a small area of medicine and he earn very high salary, more than his friend who know many different things but not deeply.
In conclusion, I think specialist is better than generalist in today job market, because specialist can solve difficult problem and get more money.
A vague, memorized-sounding opener that does not engage with the actual prompt. It names the topic without taking any position yet, and "working field" is an unnatural collocation — a native pairing would be "job market" or "workplace".
An unsupported absolute claim ("cannot... only") rather than a reasoned point. The essay asserts the conclusion instead of explaining why deep knowledge, specifically, is what solving a difficult problem requires — this is assertion, not argument, and Score-Level 17 essays frequently substitute one for the other.
This is actually the essay's best piece of reasoning — a real economic mechanism (scarcity drives pay). But it is undercut by weak grammar ("specialist skill" needs an article and often a plural, "specialist skills are rare") and the single example that follows is not developed beyond one sentence.
Whether a generalist or a specialist fares better in today's job market is a question that has become more urgent as automation reshapes entire industries. I disagree with the claim that broad, general skills are now the better strategy; deep expertise remains the more reliable route to indispensability, provided it is paired with enough general competence to apply it effectively1.
The strongest argument for specialization is that the hardest, most consequential problems in any organization are rarely solved by someone with surface-level knowledge across many domains. When a manufacturing firm I am familiar with faced a recurring failure in its production line, several engineers with broad, general training could describe the symptoms but not identify the cause2. The problem was ultimately diagnosed by a specialist in industrial vibration analysis, a field narrow enough that almost no one outside heavy manufacturing has even heard of it. His years of concentrated study let him recognize a pattern that no amount of general engineering knowledge would have revealed.
Specialization also creates scarcity, and scarcity has a direct, measurable effect on compensation and job security. Broad, introductory-level competence is, almost by definition, common, since it takes comparatively little time to acquire; employers can usually find another generalist without much difficulty. A specialist with rare, deep knowledge is far harder to replace, which translates into stronger negotiating power, higher pay, and greater resistance to layoffs during downturns, when companies tend to cut broadly capable but easily substituted staff before they cut the people solving their hardest problems3.
None of this means breadth is worthless. Generalists undeniably adapt faster to new roles and are often better positioned to coordinate across departments that specialists, absorbed in their own domain, may struggle to see beyond. But adaptability without depth frequently means starting many tasks and finishing few of them exceptionally well. The professionals who become genuinely difficult to replace are almost always those who built deep expertise first and only broadened afterward, treating their specialization as a foundation rather than an early stage they later abandoned4.
For these reasons, I maintain that specialization, not generalism, is the more valuable strategy in today's job market, precisely because it is depth, not breadth, that organizations turn to when the problem in front of them is genuinely difficult.
A qualified thesis, not a blunt absolute. Taking a clear position while adding a precise condition shows the writer has anticipated the obvious counterargument (specialists who cannot function outside their narrow area) and addressed it in advance — this is the kind of nuance that separates the highest score band from merely correct essays.
One idea fully developed rather than several ideas merely listed: the example does not just say a specialist helped, it draws a precise distinction between describing a problem and diagnosing it, which is exactly the distinction the essay's whole argument depends on. Compare the Score-17 essay's flat claim that generalists "cannot solve" problems — this version shows the mechanism instead of asserting it.
This extends the scarcity argument into a second, connected consequence (layoff resistance, not just pay), showing the writer can trace one idea's implications rather than restart with a new, disconnected point in every sentence. This kind of chaining is a hallmark of top-band development.
The concession paragraph (generalists adapt faster) is answered, not just recorded — the essay grants the point real weight and then redirects it back to the thesis with a specific image (foundation vs. abandoned stage). This concede-then-redirect move is what makes the essay's balance feel earned rather than performed.
Both essays take the same side and follow a similar four-paragraph shape, so structure alone does not explain the gap between them. The Score-27 essay develops one example until it reveals a precise mechanism (describing symptoms vs. diagnosing causes; scarcity driving both pay and layoff resistance), qualifies its thesis instead of stating it as an absolute, and answers its own concession rather than merely recording it. The Score-17 essay asserts its conclusions ("only specialist can solve it") without building the reasoning that would justify them, and its one strong idea, about scarcity and pay, is left underdeveloped and grammatically unsteady. When you revise your own essay, check every claim you make: have you shown the mechanism behind it, or just stated that it is true?
