IELTS Speaking Part 3 asks broader, more abstract questions than Part 2 ("Do you think technology is changing how families communicate?" rather than "Describe a piece of technology you use"), and it is scored partly on how well you develop an idea, not just whether your grammar is accurate. A one-sentence answer like "Yes, I think so" gives the examiner almost nothing to score. The reliable fix is a four-part shape you can apply to nearly any Part 3 question: state your opinion, give one reason for it, illustrate the reason with a specific example, then add a concession — a sentence acknowledging a limit, exception, or counterpoint. The concession is what separates a competent answer from a strong one: it shows you can hold an idea and still see its edges, which is exactly what "abstract discussion" means to an examiner.
Question: "Do you think online shopping will completely replace physical stores?" Answer: "I don't think it will completely replace them, mainly because some products really benefit from being seen in person. For example, most people still prefer trying on clothes or testing furniture before buying, since photos can be misleading about size or fit. That said, I do think physical stores will keep shrinking in number — a lot of routine shopping, like groceries or electronics with known specs, has already moved almost entirely online.
Opinion: "I don't think it will completely replace them" — a clear, direct stance, stated in one breath. Reason: "some products really benefit from being seen in person." Example: clothes and furniture, with a concrete explanation of why (photos mislead about size/fit) — abstract claims become checkable once tied to a real category of product. Concession: "physical stores will keep shrinking" acknowledges the opposing pressure is real and gives a second concrete category (groceries, electronics) rather than a vague "but there are exceptions". The whole answer takes about 30 seconds spoken aloud and never once needed the speaker to invent a fact beyond common knowledge.
I don't think it will completely replace them"——一個清晰、直接的立場,一口氣說出。理由:"some products really benefit from being seen in person"(有些產品確實需要親眼看到才好判斷)。
Practice generating the shape as four separate mental steps rather than one flowing thought — most learners can produce a decent opinion instantly but freeze on the concession, because it feels like undermining their own answer. It is not: examiners consistently rate answers with a genuine concession higher than answers that just repeat the opinion in different words. A reliable concession template is "That said, / Of course, / Although X is true in some cases, ..." followed by the strongest fact you can think of on the other side. If you are ever unsure how to develop an answer beyond a sentence, default to this shape — it works for opinion questions, prediction questions ("Will X change in the future?"), and comparison questions ("Is X better than Y?") alike.
一個可靠的讓步句式是 "That said, / Of course, / Although X is true in some cases, ...",後面接上你能想到的最有力的反方事實。 以及比較題("Is X better than Y?")。
