As cities have expanded, planners have increasingly built wildlife corridors, strips of vegetation such as tree-lined greenways or planted overpasses that connect isolated parks and green spaces across a city. Supporters of these corridors make three main claims about their benefits.

First, corridors are said to allow animal populations that would otherwise be trapped in small, isolated parks to move freely between green spaces, mixing with other populations and maintaining the genetic diversity needed for long-term survival.

Second, proponents argue that corridors reduce dangerous encounters between wildlife and vehicles. By giving animals a safe, planted route away from roads, corridors are expected to lower the number of animals killed attempting to cross busy streets.

Third, supporters claim corridors improve the well-being of city residents by making wildlife sightings, such as foxes or birds, a common part of daily life, which is thought to reduce stress and increase residents' sense of connection to nature.

Let's start with genetic diversity. It's a nice idea, but tracking studies using radio collars found that most animals barely use these corridors at all. A corridor running along a busy street is bright, loud, and full of human activity late into the night, and many species simply avoid it. The researchers who followed raccoon and fox populations in three cities found that genetic mixing between parks connected by corridors was barely different from parks that had no corridor at all.

Now, the claim about reducing roadkill. This one is actually backwards in some cases. When a corridor is placed near, but not directly over, a road, it can funnel more animals toward that stretch of road than would have crossed there naturally, because the planted vegetation draws them close to the pavement before they need to cross. One city's own data showed collision numbers rising in the two years after a corridor opened along a major avenue, not falling.

And the well-being argument deserves scrutiny too. Surveys conducted right after a corridor opens do show residents reporting more sightings and more enjoyment. But when researchers followed up eighteen months later, most of that novelty had worn off, and residents near a mature corridor reported roughly the same well-being scores as residents without one nearby. Meanwhile, some residents living closest to the corridors actually reported new complaints, mainly about noise from nesting birds and about pests moving through the greenery into their yards.
