Teak, a tropical hardwood prized for its durability and rich color, has traditionally been harvested from natural forests in South and Southeast Asia. In recent decades, however, governments and private investors have established large teak plantations across the tropics, and many analysts argue that these plantations deliver substantial benefits to the regions that host them. First, they are a reliable engine of economic development. Teak commands some of the highest prices of any timber on world markets, so plantations generate valuable export income for developing countries and create steady rural employment in planting, maintenance, and harvesting, in regions where jobs are often scarce.

Second, plantations protect the natural forests that remain. Global demand for teak furniture, flooring, and boat decking is enormous and is not going to disappear. When that demand is supplied from purpose-grown plantation timber, loggers no longer need to cut old-growth trees, so plantation expansion functions as a shield for the remaining wild teak forests and the biodiversity they contain.

Third, teak plantations improve the land itself. Teak is a fast-growing species that absorbs large quantities of carbon dioxide as it matures, and plantations are frequently established on land that had already been cleared or degraded by earlier farming. Converting such land into productive forest therefore rehabilitates damaged soils while simultaneously storing carbon, making teak planting an attractive climate strategy as well as a commercial one.

The economic case for teak plantations sounds compelling until you look at who actually receives the money, and when. Teak takes at least twenty years to reach commercial size, so the export income the reading celebrates is decades away, while the costs come immediately. And in most plantation schemes, the land and the trees are controlled by outside investors or state agencies, not by local communities. What local people typically get are short-term, low-paid planting jobs during the first year or two. After that, a maturing teak stand needs very little labor until harvest, so the promise of steady rural employment simply doesn't hold up.

Now, the idea that plantations act as a shield for natural forests — the evidence points in a rather different direction. In several countries, the most convenient land for a new plantation turned out to be existing natural forest, which was cleared and replanted with teak in neat rows, so the plantation didn't spare wild forest, it replaced it. There's also a market problem. Plantation teak is harvested young, so its logs are narrow, with a high proportion of pale sapwood. Buyers of premium furniture and boat decking still insist on the dense, dark heartwood of slow-grown natural trees, which means demand for old-growth logging continues right alongside the plantations.

Finally, the environmental improvement argument overlooks how a teak monoculture actually behaves. Teak has very large leaves, and in a plantation almost nothing grows beneath the canopy. When heavy tropical rain hits those big leaves, it gathers into large drops that strike bare soil below, and study after study has measured severe erosion inside teak stands — the soil degrades rather than recovers. As for carbon, the accounting usually ignores the carbon released when the site was cleared and prepared, and whatever the trees do store is only parked there temporarily, because the entire stand is cut down and processed at harvest.
